Fire Season Recap – “Always Be Prepared”

The wildfire season has officially ended in Alberta, and it was certainly a busy one in the north.

The big fire this year was the Chuckegg Creek one near High Level.

Victoria Ostendorf, the wildfire information officer for the High Level Forest Area, says one of the biggest lessons to take out of that is to always be prepared.

“I know there’s many people who were evacuated and affected by the Chuckegg Creek fire as well as the other fires in the province. Living in the Northern Boreal, we are privy to wildfire stars all through the summer.”

Ostendorf adds that drought like conditions over the past few years played a role in the Chuckegg Creek fire getting started.

“All three of the big major fires all started in that spring season. So that’s kind of a takeaway as well as the spring tends to be very volatile with dry conditions.”

The Chuckegg Creek fire is currently listed as under control by Alberta Wildfire, and firefighters are still monitoring the area for hotspots.
