Keeping track of serial numbers can help the police catch thieves. That’s according to Grande Prairie R.C.M.P Constable Candice Hrdlicka who says thanks to serial numbers, they were able to apprehend a suspected thief. “An owner of property had it stolen. He did indeed have the serial numbers and when he found those items on Kijiji posted for sale, he was able to contact us. The fact he had a record of those numbers made it really easy to tie those items right back to him,” said Hrdlicka.
Hrdlicka says a major risk of buying second-hand items online is it is hard to know if you are buying something that may have been previously stolen. “Do your research,” emphasized Hrdlicka. “A lot of times, if an offer seems too good to be true, there is definitely a chance that it is and usually that’s a red flag.” She also mentions that if you are able to provide serial numbers to police, it makes finding those items much easier.
