It’s been one week since students in Grimshaw returned to school for the 2017-18 school year.

The doors to the school officially opened to students on Tuesday, September 5, 2017.
And staff and students alike continue to enjoy the public and catholic Shared School Facility attached to the Mile Zero Multiplex.
The Trending 55 Newsroom spoke to both school principals about how they felt about the new facility.
“This facility has exceeded our expectations,” said Holy Family School’s Victoria Cornick. “It’s very well planned, and it’s a great, functional space for students and staff, so we are having a great start to our year. We’ve always been able to give our students a great education with the new facility, and with the partnerships that we have, and we are able to enhance that education even further.”
“For the last couple of decades, we had an elementary school, and we also had a senior high school,” added Adam Murray for Grimshaw Public School. “But before that, we had a K to 12 schools, and now we are going back to that model, which makes it a very family oriented school now. So we have our older students helping out with our younger students, helping them get to and from school. It’s really good for our families.”
With the new facility, comes a complete sports arena, including an ice surface that can be used for both hockey and ice skating.
“Power skating is one of the options we have here at the school,” said Murray. “Coach Ken Quinney is in charge of that, as he works as an Educational Assistant at our school, and he’s currently the head coach of the NWJHL’s North Peace Navigators.”
Besides the sports complex, there is also a state-of-the-art Industrial Arts facility, as well as an area for Home Economics.
“We also have a theatre at the school,” he continued. “We have two green-screen suites so the drama class can participate in their own movies. It really is of movie theatre quality with a projector, sound, and other aspect that lets the patrons get lost in what we are creating. As well, it can seat up to 200 people at a time.”
As well, Cornick also says the catholic school continues to have its unique music program that carries over from their previous facility.
“We have a guitar option for our junior high music students,” she said. “And now, we even have a music room that we can do that option in. And now, we’re just look at how to use each of our facilities for what’s best for our students, and then, as we get used to the facility, we can then start to bring in more activities for our students.”
In addition, she says that the catholic school is very fortunate to have that good relationship that they have with their public counterpart, the Grimshaw Public Library, as well as with the Mile Zero Regional Multiplex.
“We’ve worked well from the start of the process,” said Cornick. “And we look forward many more years of working together. Having all these amenities under one roof is fantastic for students, and fantastic for the community of Grimshaw, and we’re very happy about that.”
