A new poll ahead of Alberta’s fall referendum suggests a majority of voters are likely to support all five questions dealing with immigration.
The Research Co. poll, conducted online between August 24th and 26th, found 66 per cent support for requiring proof of Canadian citizenship to vote in provincial elections.
Sixty-five per cent support giving Alberta more control over immigration, including reducing immigration levels, prioritizing economic migrants, and giving Albertans first priority for jobs.
Research Co. president Mario Canseco says support for all five immigration questions is around 60 per cent, adding that the issues appear to be resonating with voters.
Fifty-eight per cent support limiting provincially funded programs to Canadian citizens, permanent residents and people with Alberta-approved immigration status.
Meanwhile, 60 per cent support charging non-permanent residents a health-care or education fee, and requiring 12 months of Alberta residency before accessing provincial social supports.
By comparison, only 22 per cent support Alberta leaving Confederation.
