Alberta RCMP say more than 1,100 traffic tickets were handed out during a province-wide traffic enforcement campaign over the August long weekend.

From July 31st to August 3rd, officers issued 1,107 traffic-related tickets. Speeding accounted for the majority, with 513 violations, while 27 drivers were ticketed for distracted driving and 20 for failing to wear a seatbelt.

Police also removed 90 impaired drivers from Alberta roads. That included 13 drivers given 24-hour suspensions, 14 receiving Immediate Roadside Sanction WARNS, 59 FAILS, and four novice or commercial drivers removed under zero-tolerance rules.

Despite the enforcement effort, RCMP say there were 28 injury collisions and five fatal crashes during the four-day period.

Sgt. Darrin Turnbull with Alberta RCMP Traffic Services says road safety is a shared responsibility, urging drivers to stay sober, avoid distractions, buckle up, and adjust their driving to road and weather conditions.
