The Peace Regional Energy Alliance is positioning Northwestern Alberta as a future hub for nuclear energy development. PREA has released a new position paper, endorsed by eight municipalities, supporting the province’s work to develop a nuclear energy policy framework.
The alliance says nuclear projects could strengthen the region’s economy, improve grid reliability, and support long-term energy needs, while emphasizing that public education, community engagement, and environmental stewardship must remain priorities.
PREA leaders say nuclear development is still years away, but they want the Peace Region prepared to attract future investment. Alberta Ministers RJ Sigurdson and Dan Williams are also backing the initiative, calling it a forward-looking step toward reliable, affordable power and long-term economic growth.
PREA includes:
• County of Northern Lights
• Municipal District of Peace No. 135
• Northern Sunrise County
• Town of Grimshaw
• Town of Manning
• Town of Peace River
• Village of Berwyn
• Village of Nampa
