Provincial officials are warning Albertans about a new text message scam claiming their health card is obsolete and must be replaced through an electronic health identification system.
The fraudulent message, which falsely appears to come from Service Canada, tells recipients their physical health card is no longer valid and directs them to click a link to apply for a replacement.
The Alberta government says it will never send unsolicited text messages asking for personal or financial information. Service Alberta Minister Dale Nally is urging people to ignore the messages, calling the scammers “among the worst types of people.”
Officials say if you receive the text, do not click any links or provide any personal information. Instead, delete the message immediately.
Anyone who believes they may have shared sensitive information is encouraged to contact their financial institution and report the incident to local police.
