The minions are back, and they have their best solo entry so far…but is it enough?
Minions & Monsters follows an alternate tribe of minions as they seek out an evil master. We see them, through the ages, fail and mess up a few times until they arrive in L.A. and start becoming part of the movie industry. In order to make the movie of their dreams, they end up summoning a monster that isn’t quite what they expect.
This is another slapstick family flick. There were a few good jokes that made me chuckle, but nothing too crazy. I dunno, I guess I was hoping for something more. It might be hard to carry a whole film with just these side comic relief characters. I know that this is the best one they have done so far, but I feel like it was still missing something. Honestly, I liked the Despicable Me movies more. I think Gru and crew end up carrying those, and the weakest part of Despicable Me 4 was the minions for me. The side plot with the character Dort was interesting, and I would have loved to see more of that, but that might just be me.
The soundtrack was nothing too memorable.
Illumination has its distinct style, and the visuals look good.
Overall, if you’re a fan of minions or looking for a slapstick movie for younger audiences, this might be for you, but I feel like we have had some better animated family releases this year that I’ve liked more.
