A local woman is spearheading an effort to have a senior women’s hockey team established in the Peace Region.
Josee Aitken says she’s received interest from players in several different communities, but they are still trying to determine a home arena.
“We’ve got interest from people within Grande Prairie, High Prairie, Slave Lake, Manning and the surrounding areas. Somewhere like Valleyview seems to be a central area for all the players, but we know Valleyview only has one rink so it may be limited. We have one person reaching out to a couple of different rinks seeing what options there are.”
Aitken recently played in the Saskatchewan Senior Women’s Hockey League and officials there have been working on getting a similar league established in Alberta.
Aitken says she’s hoping to have the team begin play this fall.
“The goal for the first year just to establish things, especially with us being so far North compared to all the other teams with three being in Edmonton, a couple in Calgary, and Medicine Hat, Lethbridge and Lloydminster. It would be ideal to get six games in during the season.”
