Residents across the Northwest are expected to hit the road this May long weekend, marking the unofficial start of camping season. But with more people heading outdoors, wildfire officials are urging campers to use caution.
Tannis McNabb says crews are prepared for the busy weekend, but conditions remain concerning as the region enters a typically dry period.
McNabb says more than 100 wildfires in 2025 have already been linked to campfires and off-highway vehicles.
Officials are reminding campers to fully extinguish campfires, follow local fire restrictions, and avoid parking hot ATV’s in dry grass.
Prescribed burns are also underway in parts of the region to help reduce wildfire risk ahead of the summer season.
And if residents spot smoke or a wildfire, they’re being asked to immediately report it by calling 310-FIRE.
Fire officials say safe camping practices now can help prevent dangerous wildfires later in the season.
