While many Albertans are focused on the melting of snow and ice right now, these is the potential for wildfires to happen with warmer temperatures.

During question period in the legislature this week, Lesser Slave Lake MLA Scott Sinclair brought up the topic of wildfire prevention and control, making reference to the Slave Lake fires in 2011 and the fire damages from the East Prairie Metis Settlement in 2023.

Forestry and Parks Minister Todd Loewen says the government is investing in mitigation efforts like prescribed burns and community fireguards to reduce the risk of fires starting.

Loewen also says the province is also working closely with municipal fire departments and other partners to ensure and effective response when fires break out.

You can watch the full video of the question period exchange between Sinclair and Loewen below.
