Ice Jam Watch Issued for Peace and Smoky River and Town of Peace River

Alberta Environment and Protected Areas has issued an Ice Jam Watch for the Peace River, Smoky River, and the Town of Peace River as breakup conditions continue to evolve.

Officials report that two ice runs on the Smoky River are expected to reach an existing ice jam near the river’s mouth by the morning of April 21. These incoming ice flows could push the jam into the Peace River, potentially triggering breakup through the Town of Peace River. If that occurs, a new ice jam could form, which could lead to quick increases in water levels.

Meanwhile, the Peace River ice front is steadily retreating and is now located approximately 78 km upstream of the town. Authorities warn that if snowmelt-driven breakup on the Smoky River accelerates before the ice front passes Peace River, it could heighten the risk of ice jam flooding locally and downstream.

At this time, the ice cover through the Town of Peace River remains intact, and no flooding has been reported.

Residents, particularly in low-lying areas, are encouraged to stay alert as conditions can change quickly during river breakup.
