Organizers behind the Alberta independence petition say they have exceeded the required number of signatures needed to move their proposed referendum question forward.
According to reports, the news was given Monday night to those involved with the Stay Free Alberta group.
This would mean the petition has surpassed the nearly 178,000 required signatures; about 10% of eligible voters. Petition organizers had until May 2 to meet the threshold, and indicate they will continue collecting signatures in the lead-up to the deadline.
The proposed referendum question asks: “Do you agree that the Province of Alberta should cease to be part of Canada to become an independent state?”
The signatures and petitions must still be verified by Elections Alberta. Official confirmation would come after the petition is formally submitted for the early May deadline.
