A growing coalition of residents, businesses, stakeholders, and municipalities in Alberta has formed Fair Electricity Distribution Alliance (FEDA) to address significant disparities in electricity distribution rates.
In areas such as northern, east-central, and southern Alberta, households pay an average of $118 monthly distribution, compared to about $34 in others.
For businesses, these fees can be nearly three times higher than in less regions.
FEDA argues this disparity creates an uneven playing field, penalizing communities based solely on their location.
The is advocating for or regulatory solutions to equalize rates, similar to measures already implemented in Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
At a recent Alberta Municipalities convention, a resolution addressing electricity distribution costs received 75% approval from members.
Currently, over 25 municipalities, chambers of commerce, economic development organizations, and local businesses have joined FEDA, with the list continuing grow.
FEDA emphasizes that where lives shouldn’t determine their power bill and is committed uniting Albertans in pursuit of a fair and equitable distribution system.
