March is Seatbelt Awareness Month: RCMP

rcmp-5

The Alberta RCMP is reminding motorists of the critical importance of wearing seatbelts to protect themselves and others in the event of a collision. Proper use of safety restraints significantly reduces the risk of serious injury or death. In 2025, the Alberta RCMP issued 2,338 tickets for seatbelt and restraint-related offences.

Effective March 13, 2026, the fine for not complying with occupant restraint laws will increase from $162 to $211, a 30% rise.

To stay safe on the road, the RCMP advises:

– Always wear a seatbelt and ensure it’s securely fastened before the vehicle is in motion.
– Position the lap belt low across your hips and the shoulder belt across the center of your chest.
– Ensure seatbelts are not twisted to allow the force from a collision to be spread across the body.
– Use seatbelts on off-road or recreational vehicles.
– Drivers are responsible for ensuring passengers under 16 are properly restrained.

Sgt. Darrin Turnbull of Alberta RCMP Traffic emphasizes, “Buckling up, and ensuring other occupants are safely restrained, should be your first priority when entering your vehicle. Breaking occupant restraint laws may not only cost a ticket but your life.”

Remember, seatbelts save lives.
