Record spending scheduled for Doctors in Alberta

alberta-government-5

In a landmark move, Alberta’s government has unveiled Budget 2026, proposing a record $7.7 billion investment in physician services for the 2026-27 fiscal year. This represents a $1.4 billion increase, or 22%, over the previous year’s budget.

Premier Danielle Smith emphasized the importance of this investment, stating, “Albertans expect to see a doctor when they need one. Access to care is a priority for families across this province. That is why we are making the largest investment in physicians in Alberta’s history, backing the doctors who care for our families and taking real action to improve care provincewide.”

Health Minister Adriana LaGrange highlighted the positive trends in the province’s healthcare system, noting, “We’re seeing record numbers of physicians moving to Alberta, record surgery volumes and more than 700 family physicians taking new patients. This record funding will help pay for treatments, appointments, services and training so that Albertans can get the care they deserve.”

Over the past decade, Alberta has experienced a 34% increase in registered physicians, now totaling over 13,000. This growth includes an all-time high of 6,362 family physicians.

The proposed budget allocates $7.3 billion for physician services, $450 million for recruitment and education, and $15 million for other supports. This investment builds upon previous initiatives, such as the new primary care physician compensation model launched in April 2025, which received $200 million over two years to support its transition.

As Alberta continues to invest in its healthcare system, the government aims to ensure timely, high-quality care for all residents across the province.
