Farmers and producers are welcoming the news in the Canola Sector of deals reached between Canada and China.
Tariffs were imposed by China back in August, but Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Chinese government have reached a deal to lessen the tariffs significantly.
The deal calls for the elimination of the tariffs on Canola meal and Peas, which is good news, since China’s biggest purchase is the Canola meal.
Even though the tariffs are still in place for Canola Oil and Canola seed, the progress made with the two countries, spells a big relief for the people in the field.
However, more progress needs to be undertaken, as financial compensation is being seeked by farmers that had to endure this recent tariff period.
Officials are optimistic that a deal on that aspect can be reached, and future deals with other countries can be reached in the agriculture industry.
The Chair of the Alberta Canola Producers Commission, is Andre Harpe.
