Fairview Regional College Transition Committee Submits Proposal to Province

The Fairview Regional College Transition Committee has submitted a comprehensive proposal to Alberta Advanced Education outlining a community-led plan to protect and renew post-secondary education and trades training in Fairview.

The proposal calls for the Fairview campus to remain operational during a defined transition period while a long-term, sustainable model for post-secondary programming is finalized. At its core, the submission emphasizes maintaining access to education for rural, northern, and Indigenous learners, supporting regional employers, and protecting an existing provincially funded training asset that has served the Peace Country for generations.

According to the committee, the proposal highlights strong regional demand for trades, agriculture, and healthcare training across Northwestern Alberta, along with alignment to provincial workforce priorities. It also identifies opportunities to partner with other post-secondary institutions to maintain and expand local programming. Retaining instructional staff and preserving campus infrastructure during the transition period are identified as critical to ensuring training capacity is not lost.

The submission was developed through extensive collaboration and combines data-driven analysis with feedback from municipalities, industry partners, education providers, and Indigenous communities across the region. The FRCTC says the effort goes beyond preserving a single campus, focusing instead on safeguarding educational opportunities, workforce development, and the long-term vitality of the Peace Region.

Alberta Advanced Education will now review the proposal alongside submissions from two other post-secondary institutions. The ministry is expected to inform the FRCTC of its decision regarding future programming and campus operations in Fairview following the review, with additional updates anticipated in early February.
