NSD Superintendent Cal Johnson retires…

After more than 30 years in education, Northland School Division’s Superintendent of Schools and CEO, Cal Johnson, has announced his retirement, effective August 31, 2026.

The announcement was made during the January 17, 2026, Regular Board Meeting.

Since joining Northland School Division in 2016, Johnson has served in various roles, including principal in Conklin and Anzac, Associate Superintendent, Acting, and Superintendent of Schools and CEO.

One of his significant contributions was guiding the development of the division’s Education Plan, which incorporated extensive community feedback and came into effect for the 2024-2025 school year.

In 2025, under Johnson’s leadership, Northland School Division received a special award from the Public School Boards Association of Alberta for advancing the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.

Reflecting on his tenure, Johnson expressed gratitude for the relationships built over the years and the collaborative efforts that have shaped the division’s direction.

Board Chair Tanya Fayant acknowledged Johnson’s steady and thoughtful leadership, emphasizing his commitment to community engagement and student success.

Born and raised in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Johnson’s early experiences, including playing junior hockey with the Flin Flon Bombers, have influenced his leadership style, emphasizing teamwork and commitment.

As he approaches retirement, Johnson looks forward to spending more time with his family and focusing on his health.
