The County of Northern Lights has released details outlining the scope of its snow removal operations during an exceptionally challenging December marked by record snowfall.

According to County officials, approximately 60 inches of snow fell in the area throughout December, with the heaviest accumulation occurring between December 6 and 15. As snowfall continued, strong winds created drifting conditions, and equipment breakdowns added further challenges to snow-clearing efforts.

In response, the County hired three additional pieces of contracted equipment to support operators and regular contractors as crews worked to keep roads and airport runways open. Equipment was operating seven days a week for all 31 days of December, as crews worked to maintain safe travel conditions.

During this period, County offices also experienced a significant increase in public inquiries, receiving an average of 24 phone calls per day related to road conditions and driveway clearing requests.

In total, 1,075.5 contractor hours were logged in December, in addition to 2,549 hours worked by County equipment operators. For comparison, average winter-month usage typically includes 2,240 hours for 11 County operators and 659.9 hours for five regularly contracted operators.

The County expressed sincere gratitude to its equipment operators, noting the long hours worked under difficult conditions, often at the expense of personal and family time during the holiday season. Appreciation was also extended to administrative staff who managed an increased volume of calls and emails while maintaining regular duties.

Thanks were also given to contracted operators, for going above and beyond by working extended hours and supplying additional equipment.

Finally, County officials acknowledged residents for their patience and understanding as crews worked as quickly and safely as possible amid extreme weather conditions.

County administration says the collective effort highlights the importance of collaboration during severe winter events and remains committed to keeping residents informed as winter conditions continue.
