In December 2025, Alberta experienced an exceptionally snowy start to winter, with Edmonton recording precipitation levels 416% above its 30-year average, marking its sixth wettest December on record.
Other municipalities also saw significant increases: Banff at 308%, Fort McMurray at 318%, Grande Prairie at 418%, and Fort Vermilion 245% above their respective 30-year averages.
Meteorologist Terri Lang from Environment and Climate Change Canada noted that many stations ranked in their top 10 wettest Decembers, highlighting the rarity of such snowfall.
This pattern, driven by snow-producing systems repeatedly following the same track, offers hope to farmers who faced severe drought conditions in 2025.
Lang emphasized that after years of challenging droughts, this substantial snowfall brings a welcome change for Alberta’s agricultural community.
