Her Worship, Mayor Shelly Shannon is wanting to work with other jurisdictions and organizations to better the relationships, and come to possible solutions concerning the main issues.
One topic emphasized is the Utility Rates Bylaw, which will see only a 5% increase for 2026, half of what the original Rate Model stated. This reduced increased came from public feedback and an understanding of today’s economic climate.
Mayor Shannon also discussed the 2026 budget adjustments. Some major projects have been put on hold. These spending adjustments stem from public feedback related to unaffordability of tax and utility rate increases. Further spending and planning needs to be evaluated as Council begins its new term.
She also needs to have further clarification and progress on the Out of the Cold shelter, with the Sagitawa Friendship Society. Stating that they are currently at an “impasse”. Council has requested Sagitawa to look at their operational model, while suggesting some possible changes such as a dry shelter or a way to make users more accountable. Mayor Shannon reiterates, future discussions would happen if there is an “appetite for change”. To date this has not occurred to Council’s satisfaction.
Shannon is excited for what 2026 holds for Peace River, stating “2026 is going to be an exception year for Peace River. I think you’re going to see a lot of movement, a lot of action, a lot of activity.”
Her Worship, Peace River Mayor Shelly Shannon…
Shannon says exciting times are coming down the pipe, and 2026 will see change for the better.
