Winter recreation enthusiasts look to have plenty to be excited about as Christmas break gets underway, with several ski hills across the region preparing to open or already welcoming visitors.
It marks the first time in a handful of years that so many local hills are gearing up for the season this early in winter. A large amount of snow received throughout December has played a major role in making these openings possible, giving hills a strong base to work with. As always, temperatures will still be a key factor, and skiers and snowboarders are encouraged to check with their local hill for the latest opening details and operating hours.
Misery Mountain in Peace River is scheduled to open this Saturday, December 20. Whispering Pines in Worsley is also targeting a Saturday, December 20 opening, while the Fairview Ski Hill is aiming to welcome riders on Sunday, December 21.
Nitehawk Year Round Adventure Park in Grande Prairie is already open. The Little Smoky Ski Area near Falher is continuing preparations and plans to open after Christmas.
In Manning, the ski hill is ready for the season but remains on hold as operators wait for temperatures to moderate. Meanwhile, Blue Ridge Mountain Resort in La Crete is still in the preparation phase, working toward a season kickoff once conditions allow.
With plentiful December snowfall and several hills close to opening, the holiday break is shaping up to be a promising start to the winter season for skiers and snowboarders across the region, provided the weather cooperates.
