In a move to bolster court capacity and enhance access to justice for northern Albertans, the provincial government has appointed Justice Robert Marceau as the new Assistant Chief Justice for the Northern Region of the Alberta Court of Justice, effective January 1, 2026.

Justiceceau has been serving in the Northern Region since 2018, currently based in Slave Lake. Prior to his judicial appointment, he practiced criminal law in Peace River for two decades, including a decade as an agent for the Public Prosecution Service of Canada. He also served as managing partner at Mathieu Hryniuk LLP for seven years.

Minister of Justice and Attorney General Mickey Amery stated, “Ensuring timely access to justice for all Albertans is a priority for our government. Justice Marceau brings years of experience and leadership to his new role as Assistant Chief Justice.”

Chief Justice James Hunter of the Alberta Court of Justice expressed confidence in Marceau’s appointment, highlighting his thoughtful approach and commitment to justice. Hunter also extended sincere appreciation to outgoing Assistant Chief Justice Andrea Chrenek for her outstanding service and contributions to strengthening access to justice in northern Alberta.

This appointment marks the 35th judicial appointment by the Alberta government since June 2023, underscoring its commitment to building a responsive and well-supported justice system for all Albertans.
