Canada Post has submitted a comprehensive transformation plan to the federal government, aiming to modernize its operations and achieve financial sustainability.
This follows Procurement Minister Joël Lightbound’s September directive, which lifted restrictions on converting door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes and allowed the closure of rural post offices.
The proposed plan includes converting remaining households to community mailboxes, modern the post office network, adjusting letter service standards, and reducing overhead costs.
Canada Post CEO Doug Ettinger stated that the plan addresses current challenges and aims to provide a strong, stable postal service focused on Canadians’ evolving needs.
The plan also emphasizes maintaining accessible services for rural, remote, and Indigenous communities.
The government is currently reviewing the proposal, and Canada Post will share further details once it receives official approval.
This development occurs amid ongoing rotating strikes by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, as collective bargaining negotiations continue into the busy holiday season.
