Possible changes to the electoral boundaries for the next provincial election have been brought up in the legislature.
Lessar Slave Lake MLA Scott Sinclair has been vocal about the possible riding changes in the North and recently spoke about that during question period.
“Northerners have gone from 13 MLAs in 2001 to only 9 in 2027 if this passes. If we don’t stand up now, it seems inevitable that perhaps we wake up with only two MLAs in all of Northern Alberta. To the Minister of Justice, even if this commission is supposed to be unbiased, don’t you think it’s time to change the rules to protect the North?”
Justice Minister Mickey Amery states that it an independent and non-partisan process.
“The boundaries commission was chaired by a judge of the Court of King’s Bench. It consisted of two members that were appointed by the government and two members that were appointed by the official opposition. The recommendations in the interim report were unanimous and nobody in this government was involved, it’s a completely non-partisan process.”
The commission will hold public hearings in January to solicit feedback on its recommendations, with the final report being submitted to the Speaker of the Legislature within five months.
