Teacher Talks With Province Hit Another Stall

stock-classroom

The Alberta Teachers’ Association and provincial government representatives met earlier this week, but those talks ended without an agreement, and no further meetings have been scheduled as both sides “consider their options”.

The strike has impacted over 740,000 students across 2,500 schools, prompting growing concerns among parents, school boards, and education stakeholders.

Today marks eight days of school that have been lost by the strike so far.

At the heart of the dispute are differences over compensation, class sizes, and overall funding.

Finance Minister Nate Horner says there’s still a major divide between what the union representing striking teachers is asking for and what the government is willing to spend.

Union president Jason Schilling said the recently presented teachers’ proposal is reasonable, not excessive, and emphasized that they clearly outlined their demands when the government asked.

Meanwhile the provincial legislature session will begin on October 27 and the government has hinted at the possibility of back-to-work legislation.
