The Otipemisiwak Métis Government and the Fort Vermilion and Area Seniors and Elders Lodge Board held an information session on a Memorandum of Understanding that was recently signed.

The government was represented by Secretary of Housing Infrastructure, Valerie Quintal, and Fort Vermilion Métis District Citizens’ Representative, Bobbi Paul-Alook.

The purpose of the MOU is to explore partnership opportunities between the Otipemisiwak Metis Government and the Fort Vermilion Seniors and Elders Lodge Board in developing and operating a culturally inclusive seniors supportive living facility in Fort Vermilion, Alberta.

The prospective facility will focus on Designated Supportive Living DSL facility, lodge and the relevant wrap-around healthcare and supportive services.

Objectives of the MOU include:

  • Assessing a partnership model for developing, funding, operating, and managing health contracts of a lodge and DSL facility with the potential to serve as a project sponsor,
  • Evaluating the feasibility of Otipemisiwak Metis Governments potential role, whether as a developer, operator, or collaborative partner in the project,
  • Outlining pathways for securing funding and regulatory support from relevant provincial and federal agencies, and
  • Identify the specific needs and expectations of Indigenous and non-Indigenous seniors and Elders for culturally respectful and inclusive care.

According to the site plan from the architectural firm, if the project moves forward, the initial phase will include 26 DSL beds, 13 lodge beds, 3 guest beds, as well as 6 tiny homes.
