“Nation-Building Projects” Focus Of Parliament Session

After the federal election back in the spring, the first session of the new Parliament had some interesting things take place.

“Nation-building projects” has been a big talking point from the federal government, but Peace River-Westlock MP Arnold Viersen says there has been some “frustration” from the Conservatives on that.

“We’ve been calling for a system change. Getting rid of Bill C-69, the no more pipelines act. Get rid of the tanker ban, Bill C-48. Get rid of the production cap so that Alberta can produce as much oil as we need to. They brought in a new bill that would allow the cabinet to pick a number of hand picked projects that would be exempt from those regulations.”

A bill was passed by the federal government on those, but Viersen says the Conservative were able to get an important amendment into that bill.

“They basically just wanted an ability to exempt these national building projects from all the canadian laws. We managed to put in an amendment that made it so that it wouldn’t be exempt from things like the ethics rules or the lobbying rules for these kinds of things because we’re somewhat suspicious that the Liberals are going hand these projects out to their friends once again.”

Viersen says he’s hopeful that this can lead to more oil pipeline projects getting built in Canada.
