Passed the Council Code of Conduct Bylaw, which outlines expectations and rules regarding how Council members interact between themselves, the public, and Town administration. Heard Fire Chief Tim Harris bring an update on the Northern H.E.A.T. Conference and Trade Show, which is coming up September 11-14. Hosted by Peace Regional Fire Chiefs, this event is usually held in spring, but due to conflicts with active wildfires in the province in recent years, organizers are trying a different date this time. The conference has two main components: two days of live fire training and two days of conference seminars, practical training, and trade show. The conference portion will bring approximately 180 people to Peace River and there will be another 110 firefighters and support staff during the live fire training. Reviewed analysis of fall and spring cleanup trends from Chief Administrative Officer Barb Miller, which showed that since 2019, large item collection has had more participation in spring compared to fall. It also appears there was more participation in large item collection prior to the curbside collection through GFL starting in Spring 2022. Discussed a briefing note from Chief Administrative Officer Barb Miller on how the first month of the pilot project with APEX Security went. We included this information in our Council preview post, but if you didn’t read that, here are some key notes:o Apex has begun to identify problematic areas including “preferred” dumpsters for diving, favoured locations routinely trespassed for shelter, and regular loitering or hide-out spots.
o Daily reports have shown that a couple of individuals are causing much of the anxiety within the downtown.
o Call reports identify that some calls should have been directed to the RCMP and not Apex, such as a squatter on private property, probable stolen property found, and a reported stolen vehicle.
o Locating, mapping, and tearing down encampments has been effective; and follow-up monitoring has resulted in several fully dismantled spots.
Were glad to hear of two gifts of recognition provided to the Town recently. Sandra McMaster, Mayor of the Hamlet of Enterprise, attended the Town office to deliver two pieces of artwork in recognition of the Emergency Social Services support the Town of Peace River provided to their residents during the 2023 wildfire evacuations. As well, Louise McDonald, President of Peace River Rotaract, delivered a plaque in recognition of the Town’s support of River Days.
