2022-2023 Fishing Regulation Changes

There are some new fishing regulations happening to waterbodies in north-western Alberta:

 

Slave Lake Northern Pike

Current: 3 Fish over 55cm

Proposed: zero possession limit (catch and release)

Reason: Recovery action

 

Lesser Slave River – Timing Alignment

Current: May 15 Opening

Proposed: June 1 opening

Reason: Protect Migrating Spawning Fish

 

Wadlin Lake (Mackenzie County) – Northern Pike

Current: Harvest slot of 1 pike between 63 and 70cm

Proposed: Zero possession limit (catch and release)

Reason: Conservation Concern

 

Talbot Lake (Mackenzie County) – Northern Pike

Current: 3 fish over 63 cm

Proposed: 1 fish over 70cm

Reason:  Lake is remote with limited access

 

Gods Lake (MD of Opportunity #17) –  Open Season Change

current: June 15

Proposed: June 1

Reason: Provides more angling opportunities

 

Shiningbank Lake (Yellowhead County) – Lake Whitefish

current: 10 fish

proposed: Zero possession limited (catch and release)

reason: Conservation concern

 

County Sportplex Pond (Grande Prairie County)

Current: 5 Fish (Trout) any size

Proposed: Zero possession Limit (catch and release) closed November 1 – April 1

Reason: Human Health Concern

 

The changes were announced during the  Northern Alberta 2022-2023 Sportfishing Regulation Engagement. The province is seeking feedback from constituents with a survey running until February 7, 2022 for the following waterbodies:

  • Lesser Slave Lake (Walleye)
  • Wadlin Lake (Walleye)
  • Minnow Lake
  • Smoke Lake
