The province has a program that will provide small businesses with free support to build websites and online stores.

Doug Schweitzer, the Minister of Jobs, the Economy and Innovation, says the Digital Economy Program will help with getting small businesses increase their digital presence.

“Particularly with this pandemic, we’ve seen this accelerated move towards e-commerce and online shopping and everything that’s happening with it. We want Alberta small businesses to be able to compete with some of these big international mega companies, so we want to make sure that we provide them with the support they need.”

Schweitzer says their goal is to get these small businesses to stand out more in the online world.

“People love shopping local, they really do, and they want to help that local businesses because they’ve been a part of their community. Peoples shopping patterns have changed. They’re used now to going online, buying stuff, having stuff shipped to their home. We’ve seen that shift in behavior so we want to make sure that small businesses have that ability to accelerate and keep up with where the marketplaces are going.”

The Government of Alberta is investing $10 million over two years toward the program.
