When it comes to reading and science, few are as proficient as Alberta’s students according to international report

The Board Chair of the Peace River School Division is giving kudos to everyone for good results. Darren Kuester says the results from the 2018 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) show that students in Alberta are among the most proficient in the world when it comes to reading, math, and science. “We (Alberta) are ranked right up there in the top with any country in the world,” says Kuester.

According to the PISA report, if Alberta was a country, it would rank third in the world when it comes to reading with a score of 532. To put that in context, the average score for Canada is 520, and 487 around the world. Kuester points out that our province has been invited to participate in world summits on education. “In the past, we have had world summits on education and Alberta is invited, not Canada,” mentions Kuester. “Alberta has always had a strong education system and always done a very good job. There are a lot of pieces to that puzzle but these are results everyone can be proud of.”

According to the report, 88 percent of Alberta’s students can read at level two (which is considered baseline) or better. When it came to math, Alberta had a score of 511, while Canada had a national score of 512. When it comes to sciences, Alberta ranks fourth in the world at 534.
