Viersen says Alberta was pretty much ignored in throne speech

Peace River-Westlock MP, Arnold Viersen, is giving yesterday’s throne speech two thumbs down. Viersen says he was more disturbed by what was not mentioned in the speech. “I was very much hoping the government would have heard the message that Canadians sent them loud and clear that they want us to work together,” says Viersen. “The country is divided and they want those regional divisions to heal. Alberta was not mentioned in the throne speech. A mention of the Foothills of the Rocky Mountains was the closest thing that was mentioned when it came to the unity of the country so we were definitely hoping for more than that.”

The Progressive Conservative MP says the struggles Albertans are facing as also not mentioned in the throne speech. “What we did hear about is how the climate is changing and we have to do something about that so that was their big focus,” comments Viersen. “There was no mention of job losses in Alberta and across the country and no recognition of the number of personal bankruptcies that have been happening lately. Canada is in a tough spot, and whether it’s the farmers, the loggers, or the oil patch and this government seems to be tone deaf to that.”

In a press release, Viersen says Party Leader, Andrew Scheer tabled the following amendments to the throne speech.

  • Offering a plan for tax relief for Canadians with a path to a balanced budget,
  • Restoring Canada as an attractive place to invest,
  • Respecting provincial jurisdiction and scrapping the carbon tax, and
  • Stopping the attack on the Western Canadian economy
