The Town of Peace River and the Northern Sunrise Rural Crime Watch Association want residents to be informed.

The Town hosted a Rural Crime Prevention Conference at the Sawridge Inn over the weekend.

Approximately 100 people attended the event to learn about trends in rural crime, as well as various security technologies available to keep property safe.

Coreena Williams is the Chairperson for the Northern Sunrise Rural Crime Watch Association and was thrilled that so many citizens attended the conference.

“It is great to see everyone out here and getting all the information,” says Williams. “Getting the formation we have from Alberta Rural Crime Watch about the various scams going on, as well as reminding everyone the importance of reporting suspicious activity to the RCMP.”

Williams talked about the importance of neighbours looking out for each other. “We all know what our fellow residents look like,” mentions Williams. “We all know when someone looks out-of-place where they are. We can call each other and say, ‘hey, do you know that person?’ and maybe they have a visitor but that’s how we can show we are looking out for each other.”

The conference also featured a trade show with booth of security technology providers, as well as Rural Crime Watch Alberta, and the local RCMP detachment.

Constable Roxanne Noss was representing the Peace Regional RCMP and also wanted to stress to the crowd that if you see suspicious activity, report it to the local detachment. “I appreciate that people respect our workload and mention ‘you are so busy so I didn’t want to bother you guys,’ but if you see something suspicious, you should call the police right away.”
