RCMP warning the public about a new phone scam

RCMP in McLennan and Edson are warning the public to be cautious of a new phone scam.

The scammer contacts the victims under the guise of being an  RCMP member who works in the Cyber Crimes Unit conducting an investigation. The scammer will request remote access from the victim, and afterwards have the victim download software. Once the software is downloaded, the suspect will commit fraud through money transfers or Google Play cards.

In one investigation, the scammer told their victim they would place $40,000 in their account to “fight the bad guys.”

RCMP will never request remote access to a computer or ask for account information. When in doubt, gather as much information about the caller as possible, hang up and contact RCMP immediately. Do not share any personal information with anyone over the phone. ‘

To report fraud, call the Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
