Peace Regional RCMP warning companies about new email scam

Peace Regional RCMP is urging caution from the public due to a new email scam.

On August 14, RCMP received a report that a large company had been mimicked using email. The scammer used a fake email address that was very similar to that of the major company. The email address was just one letter off, such as one normally ending in @telus.net  would be mimicked as @gtelus.net.

The scammer emailed three clients of the company saying that the company bank account was compromised, and that they would be transferring all invoices to a trust bank in Ontario. The monetary payments from the matter totaled $250 thousand.

The Peace Rive General Investigation Section (GIS) is investigating the situation, and is advising anyone who is handling payable accounts to verify any unusual transactions with their companies before proceeding.

Any companies in the Peace River area that believe they have been affected by this scam and mimicked to redirect accounts are urged to call Constable Michelle Phillips with Peace Regional GIS at 780-699-5506.
