The Town of Fairview wants students from the local college campus to feel a part of the community.

Representatives from the Grande Prairie Regional College Student’s Association were in council chambers this week to talk to the town about how to incorporate students more into town life.

Student’s Association Executive Director, Hywel Williams says the objective of the delegation before council is simple. “The objective was to reach out to town council to let them know that the student’s association works very closely with the local college to provide a great learning opportunity for students, and the best possible student experience,” says Williams.

Fairview councillor, Paul Buck, mentioned to Williams that he would like to see GPRC students integrate themselves more with the local community.

“It’s tough to advocate for more, or less, involvement in the community,” mentions Williams. “A lot of students don’t have that choice. Many of them are here 10 minutes before class; they drove an hour-and-a-half to get here, and have to drive the same distance to go home.”

Williams told council that over 50 percent of students at the Fairview campus commute daily to-and-from Grande Prairie to attend class.

He also praised the town for trying to be accommodating. “The Town of Fairview is actively trying to create a welcoming environment and we are certainly willing to work with the town on that.”

“At this point, it was about introductions and bringing the team together – so to speak.”
