Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health started her daily address on a sad note.

Doctor Deena Hinshaw has confirmed the first death in the province, due to COVID-19.

“This individual was admitted to the ICU in the Edmonton Zone on March 12, and passed away late yesterday,” says Hinshaw.

Hinshaw also pointed out that the man was in his 60’s, and had underlying health conditions, but did not go into details due to privacy reasons.

“This is extremely sad news and all of us involved in Alberta COVID-19 response feel this very deeply. All of our thoughts are with this man’s family and loved ones,” states Hinshaw. “AHS assures me they are supporting the family during this difficult time.”

Over the last 24 hours, Hinshaw says 27 new cases if the coronavirus were confirmed in the province, including six in the Northern Zone.

That brings the total to 146 cases province-wide and 10 in the Northern Zone.
