Mackenzie County’s Reeve is relieved to hear the province will not act on a recommendation to reduce the amount of air ambulance bases in the north.

Knelsen was responding to a review of Alberta Health Services, in which the report recommended consolidating air ambulance bases in Peace River and Fort Vermilion.

“It doesn’t matter whether it is in Peace River or Fort Vermilion,” says Knelsen.

“In rural Alberta in general, one of the biggest hurdles we have is isolation and distance from centres so when it comes to healthcare, where minutes matter, we cannot afford to downgrade our healthcare in any which way.”

Health Ministry Press Secretary, Steve Buick, stressed that there will be no changes to the air ambulance service anytime soon.

“We are in year-one of a 10-year contract and there are to be no changes during the duration of the contract.”
